MTH  Trains
 When Jerry first started in Garden Railroads there was LGB, then Aristocraft and USA trains came in. They were making mainline engines, where LGB was mostly smaller narrow gauge engines in about 1/24 scale.  To make their engines look larger than the correct 1/32 scale for the track they 
went with 1/29 so the engines would look larger than the LGB engines and make a stronger presence.

 Later MTH trains came into the mix in 2001. They had been doing Lionel tinplate replicas in Standard Gauge (close to Gauge 1). MTH chose the correct scale for the track everyone makes. 
Most live steam engines are 1/32 scale all over the world.

  Sadly the scale did not get very popular within the United States, since the engines/cars looked  a 
bit smaller than the 1/29 scale of Aristo and USA. The lagging sales made MTH cut back, then the economy then got bad and Aristo and LGB (since resurrected) closed down.

 When MTH first started in Gauge 1 they brought out some amazing models. Their first model was 
the Union Pacific Challenger. Had great detail and had the pivoting front drive that the real locomotive had to negotiate curves.  They did a couple of runs of the  UP Challenger.   It mostly pulled passenger trains and Jerry has 6 of them, including one that he made into a dome car. MTH does not make a dome car, he cut down a dome from a USA train. He also made a baggage car 
from a shell he got on ebay.

  In addition to the Challenger Jerry has most of their other steam engines. The Hudson, UP Big Boy and Southern Pacific Daylight-considered by many the most beautiful locomotive in it's black and orange colors, and it has a wonderful whistle. All  MTH engines come with a great sound system and their DCS digital control and the best smoke units of any model trains.

 MTH diesels are also very detailed with great sound and smoke. Jerry has a F-3 Santa Fe AA unit 
of two engines. He got 4 MTH passenger cars to go with it.  All the passenger cars have full lighted interiors. Jerry adds passengers to make them more realistic.

 MTH freight cars are also very detailed and unlike other companies, their cars come with metal wheels and ready for Kadee couplers, which most people use on their cars.  They have continued to bring out new cars and small runs of engines in different liveries. The latest is a run of F-7 diesels 
and a replica of the famous Union Pacific Big Boy engine #4014 which Union Pacific is restoring 
to run in their steam shops in Cheyenne, Wyo. Jerry has an earlier run and it is his favorite engine.

 Jerry uses the MTH digital control system for his engines and has a hand held controller for that. Since the engines come with the system built in he does not have to buy units for the each engine 
as you have to do with other control systems. He finds the sliding skates and power pickups on the wheels pickup the power from the rails very well and constant cleaning of the track is not needed, unless he has run a live steam engine!

The Hudson was Jerry's first MTH engine, as you can see it real puts out some smoke, really hooking Jerry on the brand, plus the good sound.
The Big Boy is the largest steam engine ever made. MTH's copy is 52" long, with the tender. It is his favorite engine. It was damaged when he got it and he had to do extensive work to repair the frame and some other items.
Southern Pacific's Daylight is considered by many to be the most beautiful steam engine ever made. MTH's version is very detailed and comes with the great smoke units all MTH steam engines get.  It pulled black and orange passenger cars, which Jerry has on order.  The Daylight has a great whistle:
Early run with the Challenger, in the winter, note it does not have the smoke deflectors. Jerry got those later and added some cars by spring, as you can see below.  All cars have painted interiors and figures. You can see them in the night scenes. 
 Jerry's Challenger is the grey version which was used for passenger trains. 
It is the one that is near Jerry in a park in North Platte, NE. It is seen here pulling some passenger cars. Jerry likes how the 1/32nd scale fits into his railroad, rather than dominating it as 1/29  scale trains do. He sold all his 1/29th cars.
 Jerry's Santa Fe F-3AA units easily pull some passenger cars. The diesel engines also have the same good smoke units and DCS controls as the
steam engines.
The passenger trains look nice on a warm summer night. Jerry uses the Challenger, but also the Big Boy, the F3 diesels and Hudson engines to
pull the cars at times.
 Some of Jerry's MTH freight cars. He could not resist the Nebraska Corn, since he lives by corn fields in Nebraska. He also uses other 1/32 scale cars made by MDC (now out of business) and Accucraft.
Jerry got this MTH dash 8 used(as he has with all his engines). He took some pictures of dash 8's in the rail yard in his town and used them as reference to weather the diesel some to give it a 'working' look.

As mentioned before MTH is still in business, mostly bringing out updated versions of their earlier offerings, upgrading their sound systems and offering different liveries. They are bringing back the Big Boy, making #4014, which Union Pacific brought back to the steam shops in Cheyenne, WYO to rebuild it to run on their tracks with their other two live steam engines, the Challenger and 844.

MTH also makes trains in O, HO and S scale.
