The Rail Speeders

Speeders, or motor cars, were descendants of the classic hand cranked track car.
They were used to inspect track and take workers to problem areas.
Now, some are privately owned and clubs organize excursions to ride their motor cars
on branch lines and scenic railroads, some for up to 10 days!

You can read about them here: http://www.winkworth.us/motorcar/primer/primer_article.htm

A buddy brought his speeder by yesterday. I was really impressed, the trailer even has grooves for the flanges on the wheels. He invited me to go on an excursion with him in Iowa this coming spring. Clubs have these all over the United States.
You can find them at the speeder web site: http://www.railspeeders.com/default.asp  There are restoration articles there and you can see the calender of events. Usually a person can catch a ride, just by showing up. They also have good articles on joining the hobby, finding a speeder, etc.
Buster Keaton made a real funny movie about going across Canada on a speeder, it was called 'the Railrodder' http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0059000/  A documentary was made about the filming of the move: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0059000/   Well worth your time to check them out.

The front view, it now has a single headlight but Dick said it used to have two, you can see small plates over the old holes. He may put two back on. This was used by the Burlington/Northern line and still has a first aid box with their name on it.
A view of the back, note the two folding seats and the grooves in the trailer floor for the wheel flanges.
The left side of the speeder. Note the side curtains that are now drawn back for inclement weather. Dick said you have to wear earplugs, not for the engine noise but for the noise of the rails/wheels.
Right side
Inside view, shows the gear shift and throttle.
It has a 20 HP gasoline engine.
Dash board view. Note the windshield wiper motors.

Right inside view, note the BN first aid box.
Dick plans to repaint it this winter.
